In the 60's and early 70's "The Planet of The Apes" movie franchise started out great before finally "jumping the shark", a term taken from the Happy Days episode in which The Fonz while water skiing....jumps over a shark. We all knew at that point that "Happy Days" would be ending soon. It means, the writers are out of story ideas and let things become ridiculous!
Enter the newest series of Prequels that began with James Franco in 2011's "Rise of The Planet of The Apes" finally explaining how it all started. The movie also includes a brilliant, heartfelt performance from John Lithgow. The movie was excellent and left us counting down until NOW when "Dawn of The Planet of The Apes" would open and we could see this next chapter.
This time it's Gary Oldman and if this is anything close to "Rise" in quality, then the franchise has been given new life for a new generation of Apes fans.
This weekend "Dawn" goes up against a juggernaut with Transformers: Age of Extinction winning the last two weeks at the box office. Transformers will move into the profit column this week if it does a measly 10 million. This would be the week for "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes" to take the #1 spot.
