News Crew Dies in Tragic Accident in South Carolina

Tragedy hit hard on Memorial Day when a WYFF news crew died in Polk County after a tree fell on their vehicle. News 4 anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer passed away off of Highway 176 covering heavy rainfall from subtropical storm Alberto.

The Tryon fire chief says the tree was about three feet in diameter and it appeared that the tree's root system had failed after a lot of saturation.

WYFF is the sister station to the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, WCNC.
